Joe Hernandez
Joe Hernandez is Vice President of North American Church Planting, CityTeam Ministries/New Generations, San Jose, California since Fall 2006.
His early ministry was among university students and his primary activity was student evangelism, Bible study and discipleship. While in his first student ministry assignment, he started his first church with the help of a group of students. It was also in this first assignment, that Joe felt God leading him to prepare himself for the task of equipping church planters.
This leading took him on to further education and while doing his Master of Divinity work at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, he met his wife, Elizabeth who was also a fellow M.Div. student. This continual effort of preparing him for equipping others led him to complete his Ph.D. at SWBTS in the area of Missions. While he was in seminary, he also continued in church planting efforts.
His interest in equipping church planters was the reason that the Home Mission Board, SBC choose him in 1981 to lead out in the development of what was called Ethnic Leadership Development, now called Contextual Leadership Development. This equipping effort which still continues today has been the primary avenue for equipping ethnic leaders for church planting and has been one of the most important tactics for church planting and church growth.
During his tenure in the Home Mission Board, Joe was asked by the Administration to serve as the Interim Director of the Home Mission Board work in the Caribbean. Serving in this two year role, he reorganized the entire missions work for the area.
After this assignment, Joe served as Assistant Vice President for Church Extension (church planting) and while in this role he led in strategy development and in the development of the Church Planting System, now called Church Planting Process, which provides for the equipping of church planters and those that work with church planters. This process still continues being the primary enlistment, equipping and nurturing system for Southern Baptist church planters and churches throughout North America.
He continues in church planting by facilitating Church Planting Movements in North America in order to reduce LOSTNESS by envisioning, strategizing, equipping and nurturing others.
