Running Towards the Darkest Places

by Paul on March 11, 2009

“Courage doesn’t have anything to do with battles.  It’s simple.  You run to the gunfire, not away from it.” – Special Agent Gibbs, ’Corporal Punishment,’ NCIS Season 5

Quotes like this one challenge me – on a personal level and on a spiritual one.  They are one of the reasons NCIS is one of my all time favorite TV shows.

This question forces me to ask, “Am I the kind of man who runs toward the gunfire, or away from it?”

Christians face this choice everyday, even though it may be less obvious.  They can risk everything while running toward people in crisis, people living in the worst filth and sin imaginable, or they can run away from it all, hide in ‘holy huddles,’ and preserve their own lives.

Hear me:  The places on Earth where the Gospel is bearing the most fruit are the very places people said would never respond to the Gospel.  My parents went to a place known as a ‘graveyard for missions and missionaries.’  Today, 20 years later, there are over 2 million baptised Believers in that area.  Villages who once martyered missionaries have been transformed by the Gospel because of the courageous and consistant efforts of indigenous church planters.  God, for some mysterious reason, honors the courage, devotion, and sacrifice of His people and uses it to reach those once considered ‘unreachable.’

As Christians existing in an increasingly online world, we need to ‘friend’ the people we think would never embrace Jesus and build meaningful relationships with them.  It mean we talk about pornography and partner with organizations meeting the needs of the producers of porn and the consumers of porn.  It means we help atheists understand that we would die for them because we believe they are God’s creation.  It means that we meet anger with compassion, hatred with love, and harshness with kindness.  It means that we become the truest online friends anyone has ever known because Jesus taught us the meaning of unconditional love.

At the end of it all, do you want to be known as someone had the courage to run toward the darkness?

I do.  I don’t want to live any other way.

Will you join me?

Yes please… Men and Sexual Sin is something I’m really big on (hence … but the church seems adverse to talking about the darkness… If I sais ‘porn’, ’sex’ or ‘masturbation’ in church I’d probably be excommunicated… where do we go from here?
